    Insightful Perspective

This book takes you on the young author’s personal journey of inward reflection and outward observation. With the ability to connect with young audiences, this book shares a rarely discussed perspective in the diving world. There’s a NEED for diversity among recognized divers, and this author is getting the message out to the young, Black, and even the world.
As a teacher, I’ve seen that students better connect with the school community when they see themselves represented. “If we see it and believe it, we can achieve it.” I would recommend this book be used with young learners to engage their thinking about diversity and inclusion in different areas of life.

A Diver Like Me is an account of a young child’s developing skill, but also the awareness of her developing identity. In a sport only sprinkled with diverse groups, the young diver sets out to grow as an individual and compete, but learns she is competing on many levels. Told by the young diver herself, A Diver Like Me is a testament to the double-minded nature our African American youth, along with other BIPOC and Indigenous populations, continue to experience and the parallels to identity development and self advocacy.

  3. Jessi Marabella – Middle School Teacher

A Diver Like Me is a fantastic book! Sanaa’s voice shines brightly as she shares her journey into the sport of diving. Her courage extends beyond facing the high dive to include trying something new and being the only one of her friends on the team. Readers will root for her success and be inspired by her advocacy for people of color to try an unconventional sport. The illustrations are wonderful additions to the story and help convey the joy that Sanaa and her family feel when she is in the water. As a teacher, I am so excited to add this book to my classroom library. I am sure it will spark great conversations about courage, diversity, and exploring student passions. A Diver Like Me is a must read.

This is a heart warming story about one girl’s journey finding her passion and also discovering that she is different from her peers. It’s an inspiration to see a young author be aware and able to put her experience into words. Others can relate to and learn from her experience. Anyone who has ever felt different in any way can identify with this story and should check out this book!
